Call for Speakers and Papers

Description

State of the Map Latam is the annual conference for all Latin America's OpenStreetMap map creators and users.

This year's State of the Map Latam conference will occur in Belém, the capital of the Brazilian state of Pará. This event aims to exchange experiences, improve existing mapping practices, and popularize open and accessible mapping worldwide.

The program will include space for keynotes (60 minutes) and general lectures (30 minutes), panel discussions, 60, 90, and 120 workshops, and even space for improvisation sessions and outdoor activities. In addition to the lectures, our aim is to include more time for organic participation among all participants.

We expect empirical, methodological, or conceptual contributions that address any aspect related to OpenStreetMap, in particular, but not limited to the following:

  • Evaluating the extrinsic or intrinsic quality of OpenStreetMap data
  • Analysis of contribution patterns in OpenStreetMap
  • Generation of new and scientifically valuable datasets from OpenStreetMap
  • Evaluations of data import procedures and their impact on the data and the community
  • Integration between OpenStreetMap and other data sources (authorized, user-generated, or otherwise valuable to OpenStreetMap)
  • Analysis/comparison of software available for scientific purposes related to OpenStreetMap
  • New approaches to facilitate or improve data collection and data quality in OpenStreetMap (e.g., through gamification or citizen science approaches)
  • Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning of and with OpenStreetMap (e.g. AI-assisted mapping)
  • Open research problems in OpenStreetMap and challenges for the scientific community
  • Cultural, political, and organizational aspects of data production and use practices in OpenStreetMap
  • Studies using OpenStreetMap data in scientific domains
  • Reviews of any scientific aspect related to OpenStreetMap
  • Applications and solutions using OpenStreetMap for the Amazon region

Don't worry if your idea fits differently into these categories. Submit it anyway. :-)

Submission guidelines

Submissions can be in three categories: General Lecture, Workshop (60, 90 or 120 minutes) and Academic Lecture.

Authors can submit extended abstracts (in English, Spanish, or Portuguese) using the State of the Map Latam 2024 Pretalx submission system. The deadline for submission is August 31, 2024.

Abstracts must be up to 500 words. These limits will be strictly enforced via the submission form.

For the academic track, abstracts should be logically structured as follows (without the need to include subsections):

  • introduction/background, where the problem addressed is presented;
  • main objective or purpose of the study;
  • a brief description of the methodology and the results obtained
  • final discussion highlighting the scientific contribution of the study and its practical benefits/implications.

When evaluating the proposals, the scientific committees will pay attention to the reproducibility of the research (where applicable). Reproducibility is guaranteed when the research makes all the artifacts (input data, computational steps, methods, and code) available to obtain consistent results. When available, the code should be released under an open-source license.

Abstracts should be submitted online in plain text format (without images or figures).

The scientific committee will evaluate the academic track abstracts. The authors of the selected abstracts will be invited to give a 30-minute oral presentation at the conference or to present a poster (if a poster session is organized). The selected abstracts will be published as a collection, each with a distinct Digital Object Identifier (DOI) on Zenodo, an open-access online repository.

Non-academic proposals will also be accepted, such as presentations of projects carried out in the region, workshops or other projects related to OpenStreetMap.
