URBAN, SOCIAL AND ENVIROMENTAL MULTIVALENT FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE CRIME DISTRIBUTION IN TIJUANA A CASE STUDY IN THE DEMOCRATIZATION OF GIS

While working in the municipal government of Tijuana, we conducted a study integrating direct data on the spatial distribution of crime with the city’s urban conditions. By georeferencing five years of case referrals to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, we analyzed environmental, social, and urban factors in high- and low-incidence areas, establishing spatial correlations with crime. Results highlight the direct impact of urban infrastructure, urban land-use issues, certain commercial activities, and social and environmental factors on crime distribution. Additionally, we quantified the minimum public lighting required to significantly reduce nighttime crime, confirming the interrelation between criminal incidence and the urban environment.

Arnoldo Coronado is a Civil Engineer, researcher, and university lecturer specializing in Structural Engineering. His professional work focuses on Quality Control, Technical Supervision, and Forensic Engineering.

Throughout his career, he has conducted interdisciplinary research ranging from the real-world application of structural design codes in the city of Tijuana to the study of covalent social, urban, and environmental factors and their influence on crime distribution patterns in urban environments, using spatial analysis and Geographic Information Systems.

He is a founding partner of the Cabo Investor Forum, an incubator-style platform designed to guide foreign investors interested in developing projects in Mexico. The initiative provides a professional support framework that integrates technical, legal, and strategic services to help safeguard and structure international investments.

Currently, he serves as a faculty member at the Instituto Tecnológico Nacional de México, Tijuana Campus, where he teaches in both the Architecture and Civil Engineering programs. His courses include Sustainable Development, Mathematics, Dynamics, Resource Optimization Models, Highway Engineering, and Topography.

His academic and professional interests lie at the intersection of engineering, spatial analysis, and urban systems, with a growing emphasis on the use of geospatial tools such as QGIS to better understand the complex relationships between infrastructure, environment, and social dynamics in contemporary cities.
