In the 18th century, Maria Theresa ordered the creation of accurate maps for the entire territory of Vorderösterreich. These maps were intended to depict land use in order to achieve better taxation.
With the help of QGIS, the old maps were georeferenced and then merged into a comprehensive map of the municipality of Görwihl.
Additionally, thematic maps (Ice Age, artificial streams, geological maps) were created, with descriptions linked to them.
In the second part we look at the flooding of 1480 at the Rheinarea where QGIS helped to show the dimensions of flooding in the villages.
The presentation covers the capabilities of QGIS that enabled the various visualizations, as well as the limitations of a GIS system for this type of application.
