Claudiu Forgaci

I am an assistant professor of urban design and analytics at TU Delft, passionate about asking spatial and non-spatial questions, mostly with R. As co-coordinator of spatial data and GIS education in the Department of Urbanism, I am engaged in building our students capacity, skills and knowledge for evidence-based spatial design and planning. I co-initiated Rbanism, a community of R users that aims to empower urbanism researchers, students, educators and practitioners to use open-source software and related open-science practices effectively and with confidence. Currently, I focus on developing an open-source tool for urban river space delineation.

Jeroen Ticheler

CEO/Owner of GeoCat BV, GeoCat Canada Ltd and GeoCat Geospatial S.L (Spain)
Chair and founder of the GeoNetwork opensource
OSGeo Board of Directors

GeoCat was founded by Jeroen in 2007. Jeroen studied Tropical Forestry at Wageningen University specialising in GIS and Remote Sensing. Following graduation in 1997, he worked for the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in Rome for nine years. Jeroen held various positions for the FAO in GIS/remote sensing and established the GeoNetwork opensource project. The FAO GeoNetwork is the first implementation based on this software, releasing a large quantity of geospatial data to the public.

Today GeoNetwork opensource is widely used as geospatial catalogue application with implementations from smaller projects to national and international level catalogs including National Geospatial & Open Data Registries and the INSPIRE GeoPortal in the EU.

Jeroen has been promoting the use of international standards and Free and Open Source Software for geographic data and information for over twenty years now. Jeroen is Project Officer for the GeoNetwork opensource project. He currently serves on the OSGeo Board, and did so in 2007 & 2008. He is a Charter member since the early days of OSGeo.

Besides everything geospatial Jeroen loves travel, carpentry, working on his overland truck, study Carl Jung’s Analytical Psychology, and walk, work and live outside.

Mahdi Farnaghi

I am an Assistant Professor at the University of Twente, Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), Department of Geo-Information Processing (GIP), Enschede, The Netherlands.
My primary research interest has been in the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and geodata processing (or GeoAI, in short). During Ph.D., I worked on solutions based on semantic web concepts/technologies and AI to generate geodata processing workflows automatically. After the Ph.D., I extended my research further into the spatial data science and big data processing fields, where I have been using machine learning (ML) for spatiotemporal modelling in different application areas, including environmental monitoring, analysis and assessment, disaster management, and spatial epidemiology. I exploited big data processing technologies and deep learning (DL) methods to extract information from the massive amount of spatial data collected for environmental phenomena. I have also been working on geospatial social media analysis using Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods.
Currently, I am working in the following directions:
- Large Language Models (LLM) and Multimodal LLMs (MLLM)
- MLOps and automation of geoprocessing workflows
- eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI)
- Spatial and spatiotemporal effects in modeling using ML/DL
- Spatial data fusion

Xiaolu Hu

Xiaolu Hu (1986) works as a landscape architect and researcher at the Applied Spatial Research team of Wageningen Environmental Research. She has been involved in various Dutch spatial planning projects with a long-term vision in the past years. According to Xiaolu, the best landscape naturally grows from the soil of the place. The landscape design and planning can only become successful through an open co-creation process with embedded knowledge of landscape dynamics. This requires a GIS-based tool, especially designed for co-creation workshops. A few years ago, Tangible Landscape (TL) drew her attention. Since 2024, Xiaolu has coordinated a project team to develop TL into an applicable tool for the atelier session in visualizing the conjunction area of the Rhine and Waal. It received a lot of positive feedback from participants in the atelier session, such as the provincial government, water board, engineering company, and design firms. Most participants agreed that TL can both help their understanding of landscape dynamics and encourage them to join the design process. In 2025, the TL team will continue its further development for TL 2.0 with wider application scopes.
