Maps are one of the least accessible parts of many public digital services. Even when a web map meets basic interface guidelines, the spatial information inside it is often unavailable to screen-reader users, keyboard-only users, people with low vision, cognitive accessibility needs, or users who simply cannot interpret dense cartography.
This talk asks a different question: what if the map is not the primary interface?
Using open source geospatial tools, we will explore patterns for making spatial information available through a voice enabled interface, GDS compliant UI, text, tables, keyboard navigation, structured summaries, audio-friendly descriptions and simplified map views.
The talk will show how accessibility can be treated as a geospatial problem, not just a front-end compliance task. Attendees will leave with practical patterns for building services where everyone can understand the where, not only those who can see or operate a conventional map. We will include a demo where one will be able to ask generic questions and hear the map provide the answer.
