At FOSS4G, he will discuss the opportunities presented by the Copernicus Sentinel Expansion missions and their integration into open-source geospatial workflows.

The Sentinel programme changed what many of us expect from satellite data: open access, regular coverage, and observations we can actually build services around. The next Copernicus Expansion missions take that idea further, adding measurements we do not currently get from the core Sentinel fleet: hyperspectral land imaging from CHIME, L-band radar from ROSE-L, anthropogenic greenhouse-gas monitoring from CO2M, high-resolution land surface temperature from LSTM, microwave radiometry for ocean and polar monitoring from CIMR, and polar ice and snow altimetry from CRISTAL.
Expansion missions fill important gaps: richer spectral information for soils, crops, minerals and habitats; longer-wavelength radar for vegetation structure, soil moisture and ground motion beneath forest cover; field-scale thermal data for water stress and evapotranspiration; direct observations of CO₂ and methane plumes; improved sea-ice, ocean and salinity products; and continuity of polar ice thickness, snow-depth and sea-level evidence.
For the UK, these missions could strengthen evidence for food security, water management, nature recovery, flood and coastal resilience, net zero monitoring, climate adaptation, maritime safety and Arctic policy. For the FOSS4G community, the message is simple: a new wave of open Earth observation data is coming, and it will be far richer, more varied and more policy-relevant than anything available today. Be ready. These missions are a huge opportunity to turn open satellite data into better services, better decisions and wider public value.
