                <description>The workshop will require some basic familiarity with programming, but this will be mostly limited to editing configuration files and we will help participants at any level. Participants should bring a laptop with VSCode https://code.visualstudio.com/ installed or another code editor that you are comfortable with. We will clone the Terriajs and TerriaMap git repositories to your local machine, edit the configuration, add links to your desired datasets, and get the map running locally on your machine. 
For advanced users, we will attempt to deploy your solution to the web as a functional web map that you can take away and use.

TerriaJS https://terria.io/ is an open-source framework for web-based geospatial catalogue explorers and is the backbone of many web mapping products including NationalMap https://nationalmap.gov.au/ and Digital Twin Victoria https://vic.digitaltwin.terria.io/ .

**Prerequisite skills:**
-  Attendees will require some basic familiarity with programming

                <description>This workshop will begin with a hands-on introduction to the GeoNetwork platform, exploring its capabilities and how it may meet your requirements. After this, we will explore several implementation approaches to  GeoNetwork your organisation may use to ease the discovery and management of your spatial resources, 

1 - **GeoCat** - The most straightforward approach to implementing GeoNetwork for your organisation is a cloud-based subscription service provided by GeoCat B.V., who maintains the GeoNetwork opensource project.

2 - **Self-hosted GeoNetwork** - Many organisations in our region take this approach. We will learn how to install, manage and use GeoNetwork on your own server, including the latest ANZLIC guidance and the simplified ANZMetLite v2 editor.

If time permits, we will introduce QGIS Atlas Mapbooks and PyQGIS to automate the map creation.

                <description>PostgreSQL is the most powerful of the open-source databases, used widely in many organisations and with a wealth of training available for free online. Still, it can be daunting to be approached without previous experience.
This workshop aims to give a basic introduction of working with spatial data in a PostgreSQL database server by showing the attendants how to install a local PostgreSQL server, connect to it, create and manage users and privileges, and create a spatial database with the PostGIS extension. Then we will move to spatial data and learn how load spatial tables, assign primary and foreign keys, and manage the data both with QGIS and other open-source database management programs.
During the workshop, Elisa will also share all the lessons learned in the last 5 years of working with PostgreSQL and the dos and absolutely-don&apos;ts that the attendants need to be aware of (capital letters, anybody?).
This workshop is hands-on.

                <description>PostGIS, sitting on top of Postgresql, is by most metrics, the most popular spatial database. Many videos are online about how to install and use PostGIS....many are from prior FOSS4G conferences and do a good job in getting you to understand the basics. Most of them, however, only scratch the surface when it comes to the power that can be wielded with PostGIS.

This workshop seeks to explore a wide array of functions that may not be used on a regular basis or are outside the scope of common spatial queries. These include, but are not limited to:
- Linear Referencing
- Clustering
- Using rasters
- Vector Tiles

There will also be an emphasis on using PostGIS in production, so there will be some usage of other software products (for example: Martin Vector tile server or pg_featureserv or pg_tileserv ). Consideration will also be given to the ecosystem around PostGIS (For example: ogr_fdw)

                <description>A normal session with the processing framework tools includes more than running a single algorithm. Usually several of them are run to obtain a result, and the outputs of some of those algorithms are used as input for some of the other ones.

Using the QGIS Model Designer, that workflow can be put into a processing model, which will run all the necessary algorithms in a single run, thus simplifying the whole process and automating it.

In this workshop we will create a processing model in the QGIS Model Designer that displays buildings affected by some event within a distance from an event location.

The affected buildings are determined by:

- Clicking a point on the map canvas to define an event location,
- Traveling a distance along the road network from the event location,
- Buffering the travel distance to intersect land parcels,
- Extracting building footprints that that intersect the land parcels.

**Prerequisite skills:**

The workshop will introduce Kart and walk through installing; creating new repositories by importing open data sets; editing and committing data changes; reviewing history; cloning &amp; pushing datasets; using and understanding different working copy formats; exporting repository data; managing metadata, licenses, and file attachments; performing branching and merging; and collaborating with other users.

To participate, no experience with Kart, Git or other version control systems is required.

                <description>This lab will introduce running GeoServer on AWS. GeoServer is an OGC compliant implementation of a number of open standards including Web Feature Service (WFS), Web Map Service (WMS), and Web Coverage Service (WCS).
The workshop will walk you through the steps required to launch the Geoserver standard docker distribution and host this on AWS Fargate. AWS Fargate is a serverless, pay-as-you-go compute engine that lets you focus on building applications without managing servers. 
GeoServer can leverage a variety of data sources including PostgreSQL/PostGIS. PostGIS is a spatial database extender for the PostgreSQL object-relational database. With AWS support for PostgreSQL/PostGIS available in Aurora Serverless we will explore connecting GeoServer to a PostgreSQL source to illustrate a multi-tier architecture. We will explore scaling out the GeoServer web tier and including a shared file service using Elastic File Service (EFS). 
Audience will be Geoserver admins/users that are interested in running Geoserver on AWS in a highly available fashion with minimal server management needs.

**Prerequisite skills:**
- Attendees should have an AWS account and some familiarity with the AWS console.

**Preparation required:**
- You will need an AWS account.

                <description>Use cases should drive product development, not the other way around. Maps and the products we use to consume them have the biggest impact on the world when these principles are adhered to. How many government portals have you visited where a carefully curated map is presented that hardly anyone sees let alone uses? Presenting the data to the user in an intuitive way that helps them make a decision or take action is essential.

Large paper maps of the 1700s were well suited to a captain&#8217;s desk as their ships traversed the oceans. Road atlases of the 20th century helped to spur family adventures and weekend getaways as highway networks were constructed around the world. The small computers in our pockets today allow us to see when the next train will arrive and which one will get us home sooner. These examples took the technology of the day and used it to make products with significant impact on society. The mobile internet in particular changed mapping in one of the most notable ways since humans started abstracting 3D space on 2D surfaces.

We&#8217;re on the cusp of another great shift in the way maps are used with many exciting use cases awaiting discovery. The technology powering this potential is Augmented Reality (AR). This talk will explore some of the use cases that AR is supporting and where it might be useful in future. We&#8217;ll look at how AR can be accessed and how the medium of access affects its utility. With these use cases in mind, we&#8217;ll assess how open tools and map data enable AR. Some of the data and tools we&#8217;ll look at include:
* Geometries of pedestrian ways
* Associated attributes: Incline, safety, lighting, access, surface type, accessibility features
* Building entrances
* 3D building data
* VPS for localisation
* Routing algorithms

The talk will conclude with a summary of Meta&#8217;s approach to map building and how open source geospatial technology powers the maps we build for today and the years ahead.</description>

                <description>Reef islands and coral cays like Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef are highly dynamic and change in shoreline horizontal and vertical positions can occur rapidly over days or slowly over years to decades. Reef island environments are severely impacted by sea level change and human activities like dredging and shoreline hardening. These impacts are likely to be exacerbated in a future of higher sea levels and changing wave climates. Despite this there are very few studies that have examined shoreline and volumetric change of low-lying reef islands over time. Measuring the horizontal position and three-dimensional volume of low-lying reef islands at high spatial resolution (&lt; 1 m) and precision over several seasons and years will provide a better understanding of the processes driving shoreline change and coastal erosion and accretion. In June 2023, we collected field data on Heron Island to characterise the intertidal zone and beach area using drones, laser scanners, and GNSS. The results from this study will help inform shoreline monitoring, management strategies and mitigation measures, facilitate greater accuracy in modelling future island states, and help ensure sustainability of the island. The overall aim is to protect the important ecosystem reef islands provide and to offer insights into tropical island change that will be relevant globally and throughout the entire Great Barrier Reef.</description>

                <description>The command line application was developed to improve LiDAR data quality checking (QC) processes, as part of the National Elevation Program. The aim has been to simplify and optimise processing the LiDAR data for region scale datasets, so our analysts can be more efficient in their QC work.

This presentation will go into the workflow and libraries used in the first command on the application, check-dataset. This tool collects metadata from each point cloud and raster file in a dataset, runs a series of checks on the information based on LINZ specifications, and outputs the results in a geopackage for a comprehensive review by our location data analysts.</description>

                <description>The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD) is working to develop new procedures and capability to enhance operational climate monitoring, reporting and services to build weather and climate resilience in Vanuatu. In collaboration with NIWA, VMGD has undertaken a project to create spatial maps of historical climate data in Vanuatu and develop operational climate anomaly maps from recently observed rainfall and air temperature data. This project aims to strengthen the capability of the VMGD climate staff to interpret and generate maps based on rainfall and air temperature observations. 

The outcomes of this project include the creation of an atlas of maps of the past climate for Vanuatu. Within this atlas, monthly and seasonal maps illustrate the historical long-term average rainfall and air temperature for Vanuatu, specifically highlighting the different phases of the El Ni&#241;o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Moreover, a suite of operational climate maps has been generated, describing temperature and rainfall patterns for the past 30, 60, 90, 180 and 360 days in Vanuatu.

To ensure accessibility, these map products have been integrated into NIWA&apos;s Climate Data for the Environment Services Client (CliDEsc) system installed in Vanuatu, facilitating easy availability for VMGD staff.

Python open-source geospatial technology has been used extensively in this project including the use of gdal, geopandas, xarray, scipy, cartopy and rasterio.</description>

PNGRoTIMS is developed based on following approaches:
1.	Complete Open-Source System Design requiring no proprietary software, 
2.	Centralized Database using PostgreSQL/PostGIS which is an enterprise grade open-source database widely used, 
3.	QGIS for Desktop GIS to manipulate the GIS data and processing of GPS data, 
4.	Geo-Server Based Web Mapping system using PostgreSQL data of road layers and other static background layers, 
5.	Automatic Updating Desktop Software using &quot;Click Once&quot; technology, 
6.	Android based mobile system for mapping and inventory. 
The architecture of PNGRoTIMS has been designed using the layered architectural pattern. A two-dimensional layering approach has been used to structure the software firstly by responsibility and secondly for reuse. The Data Layer persists PNG RoTIMS data into a PostgreSQL with PostGIS database.
The structure of the PNG RuTIMS Database is based on the data storage requirements implied in various requirements of the system including road information system, road planning etc. The database contains multiple schemas with the data in each schema. The PostGIS Database provides support for storage and manipulation.
The entire system is grouped into menus based on their similarity of functions. The following table provides the summary of the menus and the sub-sequent section provides details of each of the menus and the sub-menus.
&#8226;	ADMIN: Allows users to login, select Province/District and Fiscal year, create/ Delete new user, change password, view users, login, logout and Exit
&#8226;	ROAD NETWORK: Manages the Road Network, Inventory, Inventory Reports, Road Condition, Traffic and Utilities.
&#8226;	PLANNING: Outputs maintenance needs (unconstrained budget), under
Constrained budget scenario; Prioritize roads using multi-criteria approach which are Access to socio-economic centres, Population served by the road, Traffic, Connectivity to Federal &amp; Province, Agriculture Potentiality, Road Class Category.
&#8226;	ARMP: Annual Road Maintenance Program, This Module Registers and Produce Summary Reports of Maintenance categories of Routine, Periodic, Spot, Bridge Repairs. It also includes Upgrading and Rehabilitation/ Re-Construction plans.
&#8226;	CONTRACT MANAGEMENT: Management of Contracts including registering of contracts, contract details, Physical Progress, Financial Progress and various progress reports.
&#8226;	MAP: Online External Map and Edit GIS Map.

                <description>To date, Terria maps have accessed raster datasets from WMS servers or ESRI MapServers. With the new implementationwe are working on, maps can point directly to a tiff file in cloud storage. Advanced functionality made possible by our COG implementation will be briefly demonstrated, including client side reclassification of rasters. We will also outline our roadmap for feature development, including ideas for client side analytical capability. Importantly, we will also discuss our holdups for implementing this feature, issues that others may also be facing in this new COG world! 

TerriaJS is an open-source framework for web-based geospatial catalogue explorers, available at https://github.com/TerriaJS/terriajs. Terria is used for Australia&#8217;s [NationalMap](https://nationalmap.gov.au/), as well as multiple [state-wide Digital Twins](https://vic.digitaltwin.terria.io/).</description>

                <description>Finding and consuming relevant geospatial data has always been difficult. We have created an open-source Ruby on Rails software application for discovering geospatial content, including GIS datasets, web services, and digitized paper maps. It also provides easy download and export options for reusing geospatial resources.

By harvesting open (and closed) data portals we create metadata that then can be discovered easily. Through the extensible and open frameworks metadata is easily able to be shared between individual applications.</description>

                <description>The Essential Geometry Validation tool is a solution that runs in the cloud and allows anyone with an internet connection to upload geospatial data files for validation. It produces a report with all the defects of the uploaded data according to OGC standards. The failures can also be seen graphically on a map.
It uses a very simple workflow: upload a file, click on CONTINUE and download the report. Additionally rule violations can be seen on a map within the app.

                <description>Hydrological modelling can be performed in QGIS using WhiteboxTools, which is a powerful open-source geospatial data analysis and processing platform. WhiteboxTools provides a set of hydrological analysis tools that can be used for modeling stream networks, watersheds, flow accumulation, and other hydrological variables.

For Whanganui District Council, Overland flow paths are a common way of representing the predicted path of stormwater as it flows over the topography and we use depression areas to map the potential extent of stormwater ponding if the stormwater network is full or failure occurs within the network.

By combining Whitebox Tools with QGIS, Whanganui District Council was able to perform in-house complex hydrological modeling tasks using open-source software, which helped save time and money while improving the accuracy and reliability of our analysis.</description>

                <description>We have been using the [H3 DGGS](https://h3geo.org/) with various OS GIS tools and standards (GDAL/OGR, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, GeoParquet, Dask, GeoPandas) to efficiently compute high-resolution land-use maps of parts of New Zealand against a variety of classification systems, most recently the [Australian Land Use and Management Classification Version 8](https://www.agriculture.gov.au/abares/aclump/land-use/alum-classification) (ALUM).

You will learn about our automated workflow, which can efficiently combine a large number of raster and vector datasets through the use of a DGGS. You will get an introduction to DGGS, which we think is best thought about as a third-way between the vector and raster data models. You will see how a DGGS approach to geospatial computation lends itself well to parallel computation, because of the nested hierarchical nature of DGGS cells&#8212;which is a compelling advantage over existing methods that work within either the raster or vector data models.</description>

                <description>This presentation will provide an overview of the Airspace Risk Modelling System (ARMS), which was developed by the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) in coordination with IT company MTP Services.

ARMS provides the ability for airspace safety experts to profile the risk of mid-air collisions in a volume of airspace over a time period of interest. Users are provided with a numerical analysis of risk, as well as map visualisations which can help them understand how risk is distributed geospatially in the airspace. Various modifying factors can also be simulated to observe their impact on the risk picture. The purpose of this analysis is to inform decision making regarding changes to airspace.

This talk will include:
- Background on the project.
- Quick overview of the components of the solution.
- Discussion of how ARMS leverages open-source Python libraries to perform geospatial analysis.
- Some examples of how we&#8217;ve applied data science models to geospatial data to generate meaningful comparative analysis.
- Challenges we&#8217;ve faced as a result of needing to deal with billions of data points with limited resources, and how we addressed these hurdles.
- Future direction of the project, including plans to further incorporate open-source geospatial technologies.</description>

The term &quot;&quot;building=yes and other defaults&quot;&quot; pertains to the data we add as features in OSM as well as the various contributors who map these features and/or share the same characteristics. Our communities, projects, and guidelines often reflect a limited set of characteristics, therefore introducing limitations and biases into the data. This is particularly important across a region of more than 30,000 islands, exhibiting variances in socio-economic, political and cultural statuses and differing practices of &#8216;community&#8217;.

This talk will explore these default aspects and common assumptions using the the OSM ecosystem, as a primary example. It is not meant to assign blame or induce guilt but to encourage awareness &amp; inclusive discussions within a safe space.

The talk is aimed to understand (and take action) on how our unseen biases affect data and the progression of the mapping community including OSM. Strategies for addressing biases, enhancing data quality, and cultivating a more inclusive and equitable community, will also be addressed.&quot;</description>

                <description>The Author traveled to Nauru and Thursday Island to undertake fieldwork. As time in-country was limited it was decided to use GoPro Max 360 cameras mounted on a vehicle to capture features. The GoPro has an inbuilt GPS and can capture 360 panoramic images and video. Every road and many private roads were driven and data was captured. Video data was first processed using the batch processing tool in the GoPro desktop app, and then uploaded to both Mapillary and Google Streetview. Mapillary uses computer vision to automatically extract map data from images and we can then export to QGIS. We also use the Mapillary JOSM plugin to update Open Street Map.</description>

                <description>The Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN) is an interoperable online network of marine observation data and services. The AODN contains data observed by the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) program and partner organisations from across Australia. All data are shared under an open license and published using open source geospatial software through a platform that has been running on Amazon Web Services for eight years.

The wide variety of types of marine data that we host means that we cannot rely on a single strategy or tool to store and provide data. Additionally, there has been recent work around the globe to establish new cloud native ways of storing, accessing and analysing large volumes of data. The AODN has recently undertaken reviews into cloud-native data formats such as GeoParquet, Zarr, TileDB and Kerchunk. In one case we found we could complete a workload 1900 times faster using cloud-native formats than with our legacy solution.

This talk will cover the modern cloud-native formats we have been exploring, our assessment of them and the challenges we have faced, as well as highlighting some questions that remain over the use of these cloud native formats. We&#8217;re planning the next generation of the AODN so that we can continue to meet the current needs of our user community and position ourselves for the future.</description>

This proposal stems from work that OpenWork has provided the ICSM Metadata Working Group creating the web-based ANZMetLive V2 hosted by Geoscience Australia and the ANZLIC ISO19115-1 Best Practice guide. OpenWork proposes to offer an extended version of the GeoNetwork based ANZMetLive V2 in a managed environment to ease the creation and validation of metadata to be used in the catalogue of one&apos;s choice. Each account would provide a customised environment for users to create metadata that fits their organisation&apos;s requirements.</description>

                <description>In April 2021 a LINZ New Zealand building outlines dataset was added to ESRI&apos;s OSM import tools known as MapWithAI and RapID.

This NZ dataset is reportedly the most successfully imported via these platforms, thanks to huge efforts from the community validating and adding the buildings.

The goal of this import was to allow contributors to use New Zealand Buildings Outline data to continue to expand to the coverage of buildings across the country, using data from LINZ which has near-total coverage of the country.

This talk will look at why this leads to a mental burden, making the map harder to read and putting some readers off entirely. What alternatives there are, how this links to other concepts such as visual hierarchy and layout, the history of thinking about clutter with Tufte and Cairo, and how to keep your viewer foremost in your mind. I have seen one too many maps where they have thought great symbology was the goal and not helping their readers, this talk will help pull this back and give the listeners a really good view to take with their map creation. This talk will be more focused on cartography theory rather than practice with open source tools, however it willl give examples using qgis.</description>

                <description>This presentation describes the use of Analysis Ready Cloud Optimised (ARCO) formats for efficiently managing spatial data from different sources with varying formats, structures, and sizes. The techniques presented here were developed in the context of building a fit-for-purpose Data Management System for the Great Barrier Reef as part of the Australian Government&#8217;s Reef 2050 Integrated Monitoring and Reporting Program (RIMReP). For this project, there was the need to assimilate several datasets managed independently by different organisations, and to make them available with a common structure while trying to optimise for efficiency in the most common patterns of accessing the data.

The presentation will focus on our design of two main general structures for raster and tabular data, based on Zarr and GeoParquet respectively, and discuss how these structures were designed to optimise access to the data while maintaining a consistent framework. We will provide case-by-case examples of how these structures were tweaked according to the needs of each particular dataset, as well as our plans for the future and our experience of what did and didn&apos;t work, as a way of sharing knowledge about the use of ARCO formats for efficiently managing spatial data.</description>

                <description>The rapid growth of earth observation imagery from satellites, drones, aerial platforms, and UAVs has revolutionized the fields of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and artificial intelligence (AI). Orbica has been at the forefront of research and development, harnessing this imagery to develop advanced AI solutions for detecting diverse vegetations &amp; species using different sources such as satellite, aerial, and high-resolution drone imagery. This cost-effective tool offers extensive applications, including identifying informal settlements, mitigating wildfire fuel risks, supporting urban planning, assessing tree proximity to powerlines, detecting environmental changes, aiding disaster response efforts, and facilitating humanitarian mapping initiatives. Powered by state-of-the-art deep learning techniques such as convolutional neural networks (CNN) and transformers, the tool seamlessly integrates core geographic principles to accurately identify various vegetation types and species, including Native/Exotic forests, Shelterbelts, and Wilding conifers such as Pine radiata, Douglas fir, and Contorta. Geoprocessing techniques utilizing popular open-source libraries like GDAL, Shapley, Opendatacube, Xarray, Postgres, and others are employed to further enhance the AI models&apos; feature classification capabilities. The generated features are conveniently served as an API/Tile service, enabling effortless integration into mapping applications and diverse geospatial workflows. Continuous feedback loops ensure ongoing improvements in dataset accuracy and precision, resulting in a progressively refined dataset over time. This research presents the evolution of AI-based tree/vegetation detection models, showcasing their remarkable ability to leverage diverse imagery sources and open-source technologies to effectively address a wide range of environmental and socio-economic challenges.</description>

In this talk, I&apos;ll walk through how to set up a QGIS project to be able to be configured into a data collection app using either [QField](https://docs.qfield.org/) or [Mergin Maps](https://merginmaps.com/). Both of these tools have paid options which help to sync data from multiple users or can be used offline for free.

I&apos;ll explain several key steps to set this up, including:

1. Initialising datasets to be populated during data collection
1. Defining attributes for data collection, including options such as dropdown&apos;s for values, compulsory values, or automated fields
1. Syncing data that has been collected
1. Producing outputs

                <description>Sensitive geographic data are invaluable assets for the people to whom they belong and their disclosure should be decided by the sovereign data owner (SDO). Due to several high-profile data breaches and business models that commercialize user data, the need for new approaches to geoprivacy and data sovereignty has grown. We propose MapSafe, a client web application that first obfuscates datasets using donut masking or hexagonal binning, separately, and thereafter implements a multi-level encryption scheme that permits SDOs to share the final encrypted volume containing the geospatial information when they choose and at a level of detail which they are comfortable. The authenticity verification of the volume is facilitated by storing the hash value corresponding to the encrypted volume immutably on the Blockchain as a public record. Our approach places geoprivacy under data guardians&apos;&#8217; control, and its integration capabilities promote its adoption in existing and future geospatial web systems.</description>

                <description>We are looking for ways to streamline creating Story Maps in FOSS4G with current products or to design an outline for a new product or plugin. This is currently an area lacking in FOSS4G and whilst there are some products out there, they mostly require payment or have limited functionality. If we can come out of this with our requirements, we could then understand the resource requirements and build a crowdfunding exercise.

Our Goals
- What elements do we require? The base would include media, text, and map. However, perhaps we want to be able to view it 3d or create some dashboard like features.
- What should their behaviour be? Think about what is currently out there - what do you like, what is missing &amp; etc. We want to progress further than a map and an information box side-by-side.
- What should the base platform be? Think here about the resources for continual maintenance, accessibility, logic, ease of use. What currently offers this, could we approach them to build up their product with our requirements? Would be be able to roll what is available out there into the QGIS platform to allow for ongoing technical support?
