Learn how to find open data and efficiently load it in your web apps. We'll reveal a variety of methods to optimize feature data loading in MapLibre GL JS using the GeoJSON and vector tile standards.


This session explains how to find open data and load it in your web applications in a performant manner. We’ll showcase a methodology for finding open datasets to provide context for your maps. Then we’ll use the open-source plugin MapLibre ArcGIS to connect to, query, and render large municipal datasets from geoportals – with a focus on environmental use cases. We’ll construct SQL and spatial queries against public services, then render the results in a browser using the GeoJSON and vector tile standards.

Later on, we’ll delve deeper into how to further optimize performance in a browser: compressing the GeoJSON format into PBF, applying on-demand loading algorithms, and seeding vector tiles.
