AI is reshaping the GIS landscape, especially entry level roles. This talk explores how beginners are using AI to unlock open-source tools like OSM, GDAL, and SQL, and what that means for the geospatial community.
The emergence of AI tools is fundamentally altering the landscape of entry level GIS roles. Open source geospatial workflows once demanded significant self-directed learning, navigating fragmented documentation, deciphering syntax, and building foundational knowledge through trial and error. AI is compressing that process in ways that present significant opportunity as well as raising questions about the depth of understanding being developed along the way.
Through the lens of three foundational open source tools, OpenStreetMap, GDAL/OGR, and spatial SQL, this presentation examines how AI is changing the way that early career GIS professionals learn, work, and grow.
OpenStreetMap represents one of the most expansive open data resources available to those entering the field, yet it is frequently underutilized at the entry level. Many beginners are aware of OSM but never move beyond downloading a file and dropping it into a project. AI is lowering that barrier to help beginners navigate the OSM ecosystem and develop the confidence to work with it in a more meaningful way.
GDAL and OGR have been essential to open source geospatial workflows, yet have been equally notorious for their steep learning curve. For many beginners, the command line alone is extremely intimidating. AI is changing that dynamic by helping beginners build commands, interpret errors, and understand what went wrong without having to dig through documentation or wait for a forum response.
For many entering the field without a database background, postGIS can feel like a foreign language. Writing a query that actually returns meaningful spatial results requires understanding of database logic and geographic relationships. AI is helping to bridge that gap, offering a path towards comprehension rather than simply producing working queries.
As AI continues to reshape how people are entering the GIS field, the geospatial community faces an important question: are we developing professionals who can use these tools, or professionals who truly understand them? This presentation closes with that question and what it means for the future of the GIS profession.
Jada O'Donnell is an early career GIS Analyst at CivilGrid, where she builds and manages utility infrastructure datasets across the United States. With a master's degree in GIS, she works across tools including QGIS, PostGIS, and SQL. Speaking from firsthand experience as an entry-level professional, she explores how AI is transforming the skills, workflows, and expectations of the next generation of GIS practitioners.
