This talk discusses a fieldwork implementation with QField involving sampling grids, custom forms, and multi-device syncing in a remote archaeological field site with no internet access.
This talk will describe the application of QField and QGIS in a remote field site in the mountains of Uzbekistan in 2025. The project focused on a Silk Road metal production area, was initially planning on using ESRI Fieldmaps, but the project basecamp did not have internet and the need for offline syncing between multiple devices made QField cable mode an obvious choice, as no internet is required. Additional features used in this archaeology project that are generally useful to most scientific field projects will be discussed. These include custom data entry forms, sampling grids in steep terrain, and high resolution RTK GNSS.
