OpenStreetMap 101
11-03, 09:00–12:00 (America/New_York), Lake Audubon

This hands-on session will introduce you to OpenStreetMap, the world’s largest crowdsourced geospatial database. Learn how to edit the map and use popular tools in the OSM ecosystem like MapRoulette, the OSM US Tasking Manager, and OSMCha.

OpenStreetMap offers free and open source geospatial data through the power of crowdsourced volunteer efforts. This workshop is designed for beginners, perhaps those who may have seen OpenStreetMap credited in the bottom right corner of a web map and are curious to learn more about it, or those who are interested in extracting OSM data for professional use. No prior experience with mapping or GIS is required for this session.

Participants will gain a foundational knowledge of OpenStreetMap and its community of contributors, learn how to confidently make edits using the iD editor, explore different tools supported by OpenStreetMap US, learn how OSM’s open data supports various geospatial projects, and understand the communal nature of the project’s governance structure.

The rough agenda outline is:
- Introduction to OpenStreetMap and its community (30 minutes)
- Getting started with iD editor (30 minutes)
- Mapping together (either a group mapping activity, or guidance to choose personal mapping projects, depending on attendance) (45 minutes)
- Exploring OSM US tools (30 minutes)
- Open mapping and troubleshooting (45 minutes)

“OpenStreetMap 101” will offer a comprehensive introduction to the world of collaborative mapping, empower participants to contribute meaningfully to OSM, and leverage its data to enrich the open geospatial landscape.

Alyssa is the Program Coordinator at OpenStreetMap US. When she's not supporting OSM US programs like TeachOSM and Mapping for Impact in her day job, she's exploring the beautifully mapped bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure in her home of Richmond, Virginia.

I'm a software developer working on open-source software that supports the OpenStreetMap project - a free map of the world that anyone can edit.
