Sylvain Corlay

Sylvain Corlay is the founder and CEO of QuantStack, a company specialising in open-source software for scientific computing.

As an open-source developer, Sylvain is very active in the scientific computing ecosystem, particularly in the Jupyter project, as well as in the conda-forge and xtensor projects. In 2018, he and the other members of the Jupyter leadership were honoured with the ACM Software System Award.

Beyond QuantStack, Sylvain is very involved in the community. He was a board member of the NumFOCUS foundation from 2018 to 2024, organised the JupyterCon 2023 conference in Paris, and has been coordinating the PyData community in Paris since 2017, as organiser of the PyData meetup group and conference in 2024 and 2025.

The Jupyter ecosystem is a cornerstone of data science, providing a robust environment for interactive computing. It also excels in geographical data analysis, supported by a vibrant ecosystem of open-source tools and technologies. These tools, integrated within Jupyter, facilitate scalable geospatial data analysis and visualization in the cloud, such as the Pangeo stack.

This keynote introduces JupyterGIS, a new addition to the Jupyter ecosystem. Built upon JupyterLab, JupyterGIS is a QGIS-like tool for the web, enabling the creation and sharing of interactive maps and data visualizations. Beyond standard GIS functionalities, JupyterGIS supports real-time collaborative editing of GIS files. Its compatibility with JupyterLite allows for large-scale deployments, opening up possibilities for science popularization and citizen science.

Finally, we explore ongoing developments and offer a preview of upcoming features. Some of these innovations are on the horizon, while others will require substantial effort and funding and to bring to fruition.
