High School Students' Journey with Re:Earth: Initiatives for Peace and Education
2026-09-02 , Phoenix Hall

Re:Earth is an open-source geospatial data platform.
High school students in Hiroshima have used Re:Earth for initiatives related to peace and inquiry-based education.
In this session, held in conjunction with FOSS4G Hiroshima, the students will introduce their own initiatives and what they learned.

Eukarya Inc., the company developing and operating the open-source data platform Re:Earth, was founded by members of the laboratory of Professor Hidenori Watanabe, known for creating the Hiroshima Archive.
Re:Earth was developed with the vision of democratizing digital archives — making it possible for anyone, non-engineers, to create and share them easily.
High school students in Hiroshima have used Re:Earth in a variety of projects related to peace and education, including preserving the memories of atomic bombing survivors, visualizing war-related sites, and supporting inquiry-based learning for their communities.
In this session, taking the opportunity of FOSS4G being held in Hiroshima, the students will present their own projects and reflect on what they learned through using Re:Earth and working with digital archives.
