iRIC: An Open-Source Platform for River and Flood Simulation

iRIC is a free and open-source software platform for river flow, flood inundation, sediment transport, and rainfall-runoff simulation. It provides a common graphical interface for a wide range of numerical models developed by researchers and engineers.

This sponsor session briefly introduces the iRIC platform, its international user and developer community, and recent developments in river and flood simulation. We also invite researchers, engineers, developers, educators, and organizations to visit our booth and explore opportunities for collaboration.


River and flood simulation software is often developed independently for individual research projects, making it difficult for engineers, researchers, students, and public agencies to access and use advanced numerical models.

iRIC addresses this challenge by providing a common, free and open-source software environment for numerical simulation in river engineering and related fields. The platform supports multiple solvers for river flow, flood inundation, sediment transport, riverbed evolution, rainfall-runoff processes, and other water-related phenomena.

Through a unified graphical user interface, users can prepare input data, generate computational grids, run simulations, visualize results, and export outputs without having to build an entire modelling environment from scratch.

In this five-minute sponsor presentation, we will introduce:

  • the concept and structure of the iRIC platform;
  • examples of river and flood simulation;
  • the international iRIC user and developer community;
  • opportunities for software development, research, education, and practical collaboration.

Kazutake Asahi is a river engineer, software developer, and Director and Co-Leader of iRIC-UC. He has contributed to the development and international promotion of iRIC since its early stages. He holds a Ph.D. in river engineering from Hokkaido University. His work focuses on numerical modelling and open-source software for river flow, flood inundation, sediment transport, and riverbed evolution. He is also the founder and CEO of RiverLink Inc., connecting academic research, software development, and practical river engineering.
