GeoNode is an open source web platform for the development of interoperable spatial data infrastructures.
The workshop will provide an introduction to GeoNode starting with an overview of its functionalities for managing, data, users and documents covering also more advanced concepts.


The workshop will provide an introduction to GeoNode starting with an overview of its functionalities for managing data, users and documents covering also more advanced concepts like managing layers, editing layer styles, managing maps, dashboards and geostories and more; advanced information on data management will also be provided in order to ensure performance data dissemination.

The workshop will also cover advanced administration and configuration concepts covering, the administration panel, management commands and much more.

In order to participate no previous knowledge of GeoServer and OGC services is required, but a basic knowledge of GIS concepts and basic data formats (shapefiles, geotiff) is recommended.

Prerequisites

A link to a web demo instance will be provided during the workshop so you can follow along with most of the exercises (note: this excludes admin-only features).

If you prefer to follow along hands-on by installing GeoNode, the geonode-project provides a Docker Compose setup. The Quick Docker Start README describes how to set up the application. The Docker setup will take minutes to download dependencies, so we highly recommend preparing beforehand (internet connection required).

A dedicated UI handles most interactions, though basic knowledge of Python is helpful. Workshop materials are available here:

For Windows we recommend installing GeoNode inside WSL

Hardware at least:

  • 4 CPUs
  • 8GB free RAM
  • 40GB free storage

It's suggested that participants bring their laptops with Git and Docker installed and configured to practice during the hands-on training.

Another option is to register on the public GeoNode demo instance (https://stable.demo.geonode.org), but this will not allow testing administrative functionalities.

NOTICE The instructions below refer to a previous version of GeoNode. They will be updated during the upcoming weeks.

The GeoNode installation could take some minutes to download the needed dependencies so we strongly suggest to prepare it beforehand.
